How the surname lookup works

A surname can have Simplified, Traditional and Japanese character forms. The tool normalises the characters and shows both a Japanese on-reading and a Katakana reference based on Mandarin pronunciation.

When a character has several on-readings, the available candidates remain visible for comparison.

Single and compound surnames

Wang, Li and Zhang are entered as single characters. Compound surnames such as Ouyang, Sima and Zhuge are kept together when Kana and Romaji are formatted.
