Why one character can have several readings
Kanji entered Japanese at different times and from different sources, so a single character may retain several on-readings. The recorded candidates are shown together, with the first used as the default in combined name results.
Polyphonic readings in Mandarin
Characters such as 乐, 行, 重 and 长 can also have more than one Mandarin pronunciation. The one-character lookup lists tone-marked Pinyin together with a Katakana reference for each candidate.
Character form and reading
A Simplified character may first map to a Japanese form, such as 张 to 張. This character mapping is shown separately from the pronunciation.
